Art Talks: Casey Reas – Combining Code and Stan Brakhage

This week on Art Talks #3, we sat down with faculty and visiting artist Casey Reas. We spoke with him about his experience teaching Experimental Video and Animation Through Code one week, and making a new series of video work at the ranch the next. Listen to him discuss the purpose of creating art with code and its ability to mingle with the other crafts at Anderson Ranch. His current muse and inspiration for his new video work is experimental film genius Stan Brakhage and his famous films Mothlight and The Garden of Earthly Delights.  A Colorado native, Brakhage is considered one of the founders of experimental film during the 60’s and 70’s. To view digital copies of those handmade films, see these links below:

Casey uses these films as jumping off points for his new work in Processing, a program for creating video with code that Casey co-founded.

Casey Reas is an artist and educator. He has a studio in Los Angeles and he is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles in the Department of Design Media Arts. With Ben Fry, Casey co-founded Processing in 2001, a computer programming language created to teach non-programmers computer programming fundamentals in a visual way.
