What does it mean to create an honest, or authentic, work of art? How does working from the perspective of personal narrative present specific challenges? Many contemporary artists are delving into deeply intimate subject matter while at the same time exploring history, cultural indicators and engaging in the practice of visual storytelling. This exciting virtual program, moderated by Liz Ferrill, Artistic Director of Painting, Drawing & Printmaking, embarks upon an in-depth conversation with artist Simonette Quamina regarding the ways in which she embraces, and rebels against, expectations and confines of the art world.

She tackles the questions many artists ask themselves: “How do I transcend the expectations put upon me as an artist due to my cultural background and education in art? How do I create a work of art that expresses my true nature, telling the story that I choose to share?” We tackle these questions by exploring the art making process including materials choices, subject matter and deciding whether and when to invite your audience into your studio practice.

Simonette Quamina received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her diverse upbringing in Canada, South America, the Caribbean and New York City is constantly woven into the narrative of her prints, collages and large-scale drawings. She has exhibited nationally and her works are part of the RISD Special collections library, as well as numerous private collections. She was the recipient of the 2017 Salem Art Works fellowship, the 2017-2018 Provincetown Fine Art Works Center residency and is a studio recipient of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio program in New York City. She lives in New York and is an Assistant Professor of Printmaking at the Eastern Connecticut State University.
