Jenene Nagy & Joshua West Smith
DATES: June 29 – July 3, 2015
SKILL LEVEL: III – IV
CONCEPT: Investigate the current state of “painting” in a contemporary context with this hand-on workshop. The boundary of painting and sculpture has become increasingly blurred. As the art world becomes more interdisciplinary, we as makers have the opportunity to clarify our intentions and employ systems and methodologies that clearly communicate our ideas. Through readings and discussions we have the opportunity to define for ourselves the boundary of “image” and “object”.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use acrylic and oil painting, collage, papier-mâché, found object assemblage, basic woodworking techniques and cold connections. Artists such as Katherina Grosse and Jessica Stockholder serve as launching-off points for dialogue and exercises. Students will have access to both the painting and sculpture studios.
ACTIVITIES: We learn with daily exercises, slide lectures, readings and discussion, faculty led demos, individual and group critiques and ample studio time.
FACULTY: Jenene Nagy and Joshua West Smith are partners of the curatorial project TILT Export:, an independent art initiative that works in partnership with a variety of venues to produce its exhibitions. TILT Export: serves as a catalyst for opportunity, awareness and the challenging of ideas through art making. www.tiltpdx.com www.jenenenagy.com www.jjfab.com
