Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Chicago.
How did you find out about Anderson Ranch Arts Center?
My first experience with Anderson Ranch was taking a teen ceramics class when I was about fourteen. Since then I have come back to Anderson Ranch as a summer intern and student before becoming a resident this spring.
What are you working on during your residency?
I tend to work on a few projects at the same time, thus I can work a little over each every day. I have been working on an installation piece that includes both images and sculpture, creating a system of works. I am also working on a wall installation of folded paper printed with a moire pattern.
Has your residency at Anderson Ranch affected your practice at all? How so?
It has helped me take more risks in my work. Because I have access to large format printers and 3-D printing right on site, it allows me to test out ideas quickly and try out modes of making that are new to my practice.
How do you describe your artistic practice?
I am a photographer by training, but my work manifests in various mediums; photography, sculpture, installation and video. All of my work grapples with the nature of the photograph and what exists between two and three dimensions.
When do you make art in your studio?
I work mostly during the day, and a few hours after dinner.
How do you spend your time when not working in the studio?
Skiing and reading mostly.
What intrigues you in the art world today?
The delineation between mediums disappearing..
What art do you most identify with?
I have always been very intrigued by the light space artists. Their work challenges how we understand ourselves in space, as well as creating what appears to be visually simple gestures that are conceptually complex.
What is your favorite part about Anderson Ranch?
The people. The conversations I have had with other residents, staff or visiting artists in the studio, or at the dinner table has always been my favorite part of being at Anderson Ranch. Everyone brings a different perspective and way of making.
