Starting in Pieces: responding to materials & ideas – D1219

December 11, 2014

Posted In: Painting and Drawing

Brenda Mallory

DATES: August 17 – 21, 2015

SKILL LEVEL: Open to all

CONCEPT: Interruptions, stoppages and resumptions are themes we explore as we create assemblage pieces in both two and three dimensions. We make collages and constructions from the elements we create, find or repurpose. The techniques we use to dis-connect (ripping, slicing, shredding, burning) and re-connect (sewing, nailing, knotting) are as important as the elements themselves, as we question how our choices create a visual language and turn disparate materials into a whole. The point is to explore materials and processes, and to respond to those explorations. We study the work of artists such as Leonardo Drew, Chakia Booker, Tara Donovan, El Anatsui and Derrick Velasquez.

MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students are encouraged to bring materials or plan to procure materials through scavenging or thrift shopping. This class is about creative problem solving and generating ideas, learning to improvise and responding both conceptually and materially.

ACTIVITIES: We learn through slide presentations, lectures and warm-up exercises. We spend most of the day working on projects and with one-on-one instruction and conversation. We have a few readings with subsequent discussions. There are short class critiques after each assignment.

FACULTY: Brenda Mallory received her B.F.A. from Pacific Northwest College of Art. She has received grants from the Oregon Arts Commission, Regional Arts & Culture Council, and the Foundation for Contemporary Art in New York. She is an M.F.A.
