Ed Kashi & James Estrin
DATES: July 6 – 10, 2015
SKILL LEVEL: II – IV
CONCEPT: The digital age has given documentary photographers and photojournalists new ways to tell stories with greater authorship and control. Our focus is how to create a personal documentary project and get it seen. The ultimate goal is to find a subject that speaks to a personal passion, document it in a unique visual style and disseminate the work. We harness new technologies to be more effective storytellers including iPhones and Instagram, social media and transmedia.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use digital SLR, digital image making, image editing and Adobe Lightroom.
ACTIVITIES: We participate in morning/afternoon shooting with mid-day editing and review sessions, group reviews of each student’s portfolio/essays, oneon- one sessions with the instructors to discuss personal projects, and talk about career advice or the promoting and publishing of work.
FACULTY: Ed Kashi is a photojournalist, filmmaker and educator whose sensitive eye and an intimate relationship to his subjects are signatures of his work. He is a member of the VII Photo Agency. Through his photography, filmmaking and work as a mentor, teacher and lecturer, Ed is a leading voice in the photojournalism and visual storytelling community. www.edkashi.com
