The Business of Live Edge Slab Furniture: Design and Construction

David Stine, Stephanie Abbajay

Tuition $1,370
Code W1514-25

Delve into the techniques and business of slab-based furniture construction in this two-week intensive. We focus on advanced live edge techniques, such as harvesting, milling, and drying slab lumber, dealing with bark and live edges, using bowties and other types of keys, and crack stabilization. Students learn how to fill knots and voids and how to deal with wood movement. We demonstrate advanced topics such as bleaching to remove iron stains, finishing options, and strategies for selecting different woods in different climates for different purposes. Students learn some practical approaches to "design as you go,” and how to let the materials dictate the design. The workshop includes discussions by Stephanie Stine that give insight into running a furniture business. Participants make a piece of furniture and leave with an understanding of ergonomics and a fresh approach to design goals.
