Big Small Things or Small Big Things: Explorations in Space, Scale, and Material

Katy Barkan

Tuition $1,290
Code S1011-25

In this experimental workshop, participants combine practical building skills with architectural intervention, exploring how matter and form communicate in the built environment. While space is abstract, material is tangible. We will explore the intersection of both spatial and material practices by creating models, both miniature and human scale. Students conduct thought and material experiments using various media such as concrete, plywood, carpet, and roofing materials. The projects in this workshop explore – and celebrate – problems of dissonance between form and material, coarseness and smoothness, low and high, soft and hard. Participants learn a wealth of strategies for combining materials and develop new ways of understanding how space, materials, and scale interact to create experiences and meaning. This workshop is ideal for creatives interested in sculpture installation, interior design, and architecture.
