Green Sand Casting Bronze and Aluminum

Concept
The course is a hands-on exploration of the methods of green sand casting, leading students in the process of using sand as a recyclable mold material to cast hot metal. We explore the techniques of creating a simple rigid pattern in wood, plaster, or a PLA 3D print. A wooden box, called a flask, is created to hold the sand mold and molten metal is then poured into the sand to take the shape of the pattern. This process can be repeated from scratch rapidly and allows for the sand to be recycled and used again, making it an economical and ecological method for working through ideas quickly. Class time consists of in-depth demonstrations balanced with plenty of studio work time for exploration, experimentation, and finishing.

Betsy Alwin
Visiting Director of Ceramics and Expanded Media
Betsy Alwin is a sculptor working across mediums. She has two decades of teaching and curriculum experience including serving as the Dean of Skowhegan School of Painting & Drawing for several years. She attended Skowhegan, holds an MFA from Illinois State University, a BFA in Sculpture and a BA in Spanish language from Minnesota State University. Her work has been exhibited widely, including the Berkshire Botanical Gardens (Mass MoCA), the National Botanic Gardens in Washington D.C., AIR Gallery, New York, The Phipps Center, Hudson WI, the Waiting Room Gallery, Edina, MN, Burnet Fine Art Advisory, Wayzata, MN and Rubine Red Gallery in Palm Springs, CA. Public commissions include sculptures at the Onoden Elementary School in Tokyo, Japan, Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, MN and Silverwood Park in St. Anthony, MN. She is the recipient of numerous awards including a 2022 Artist Individual Support Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Alwin recently served as co-curator with Steve Locke for the exhibition Distance: Works on Paper at Dorsky Gallery in Long Island City, NY. Her work will be featured in the Clio Art Fair in New York City this May. Alwin is a member of the Minneapolis collective Rosalux Gallery and exhibits her work at Rubine Red in Palm Springs, CA

At Anderson Ranch, our sculpture program offers a vibrant spectrum of workshops that reflect a variety of studio practices. At the confluence of tradition and technology, these programs are material and technique-rich, ranging from classical metal fabrication to experimental digital production.
Students work in communal and interactive studios designed for all levels of experience, supporting traditional and nontraditional methods. The sculpture studios are fully equipped with advanced machinery and offer additional outdoor covered workspace.
Our renowned sculpture faculty work closely with students through critical discussions, material demonstrations and individual assistance. Instructors encourage exploration and experimentation, emphasizing process and idea development. We complement this with a focus on process and sound construction. You leave with far more than finished pieces—you walk away with the tools and inspiration required to elevate your studio practice.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.

Master Class: The Engineer and Madam Bricolage are Lovers

In the early 1990s "Bricolage" was heavily referenced as a method of discourse, based on ideas found in the works of French theorists Claude Levi-Straus and Jacque Derrida. Thirty years later the term has become ubiquitous, naming entrepreneurial theory, restaurants, and architecture firms. Lifting small quotes from original texts, Sheila leads a master class in her favorite studio methods of accumulation, construction, and "taking apart and putting- back together," all the while subjecting outcomes to tests of complexity, legibility, and aesthetic resolve. Open to all media from metal to found materials to fabric, this class encourages participants to come with their own set of studio practices and concerns, but to be looking for an opportunity to grow and expand their work.

Creative Reuse

By adopting creative reuse strategies in art-making practices, artists will transform everyday objects and discards into assemblages, sculptures, and installations. When researching a common object’s history, its use, circulation, and disposal, we see the devastating consequences of extractive practices and overconsumption on our planetary health. How can artists instead, use our junk and leftover scraps to hold memory, tell stories, and evoke regenerative possibilities? While salvaging and repurposing materials, artists explore innovative ways to infuse personal meaning, cultural significance, and ecological urgency in their artwork. This workshop is structured around group critiques, individual feedback, and studio time.
