Layered Surfaces: From a Photograph to a Screen Print

Concept
Participants in this class use original photographic imagery as source material to create multilayered, dynamic, and unique screen prints, learning step-by-step details of the screen printing process, including screen preparation (exposing and washing), halftone transparency creation, registration, and printing. Additional layering methods include exploratory paper dyeing techniques using natural and synthetic pigment, flocking, and hand-generated transparencies. The goal of this class is to push the possibilities of screen print, transforming photographic images into multilayered dynamic prints. Students leave the class with a foundational understanding of the screen print process and a collection of unique prints.

Adriana Barrios
Adriana Barrios is an interdisciplinary artist who uses printmaking, paper making, video, and installation to record and respond to the environmental changes happening along the California coastline due to climate change. Adriana has exhibited her artwork internationally in Italy and Mexico and nationally in New York, New Mexico, and Texas.

Printmaking

Our Printmaking program fosters a supportive studio atmosphere where artists of all levels have the freedom to experiment and learn new techniques. Summer printmaking workshops, taught by accomplished artists and educators, offer a fresh take on the medium, mixing traditional processes with experimental attitudes.
Anderson Ranch’s Patton Printmaking Studio is clean, spacious, and outfitted with a variety of presses and equipment to accommodate screen printing, relief, intaglio, monoprinting, bookmaking, mokuhanga and lithography. Students have access to individual work tables, wall space, palettes, rags, hand tools, power tools, computers with Adobe software, wi-fi, printing, scanning, and projection capabilities.

Lodging & Meals
Housing is limited and includes shared and private lodging options. Reservations will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you reserve housing, the better your chance of receiving your preferred option. Please note: Workshop costs do not include accommodations.
We have established a Business Safety Plan with added layers of precaution that prioritize the health and safety of our staff, students, faculty and guests while continuing to provide you with the Anderson Ranch experience that you know and enjoy.
The Ranch Café meal plan that is included with Room and Board fees strives to provide healthy, creative meals that will nourish your artistic creativity. The meal plan includes 5 days of continental breakfasts that will include a hot offering, 5 lunches with a selection of offerings, and 5 dinners.

Making Art Accessible
Applications for scholarship support are encouraged. Specific scholarships are funded by Ranch supporters, either through endowed funds or special gifts.
Many colleges and universities offer college credit for workshops taken at Anderson Ranch. Discounts are available for students and teachers.

Experimental Prints in Mixed Media

In this multifaceted and exploratory printmaking workshop, students are introduced to a multitude of printmaking techniques to combine in unique ways. Demonstrations teach the white line woodcut method, trace monotypes, silkscreen monotypes, and stencil silkscreen as separate processes that can be used on their own or layered to produce a unique body of prints. Students are encouraged to use these processes to enhance and charge their imagery, with a focus on surface, color, layers and composition. Emphasis is on creating a cohesive series of prints that convey a clear message with pop and dynamism.

Mokuhanga, the Baren and Printing at Home

This exciting printmaking intensive focuses on mokuhanga: water-based Japanese woodblock printmaking. This unique, environmentally friendly process involves hand carving and can be done at home on any scale, at any time, and in any place. The class discipline is to work in a narrative concept, creating a dialog in both storytelling and relationship with color, form, and space as a narrative in a diptych or long format. The students compose and recompose printed compositions to create complex images printed from beautiful shina wood onto traditional Japanese mulberry paper.
