The Brutal and the Delicate: Steel Combined With Soft Materials

Jun 6 - 10, 2022

9AM-5PM

Concept

Throughout the history of art, steel is a material commonly associated with industry, violence and strength. This workshop challenges such connections, investigating ways that steel can become visually delicate, and inventing new meanings and visual relationships through combining steel with materials that contain opposite characteristics. Exercises address both technical and creative inquiries regarding how steel is cut, shaped and physically joined and how to challenge material assumptions if steel becomes a secondary, rather than a primary, compositional element. We explore the aesthetic and technical consequences of combining steel with soft, vulnerable, contradictory and unexpected materials.

Media

Cutting, forming and welding steel, found objects and recycled materials, techniques and tools (both hand and mechanized) used to combine steel with other media

Sculpture

Express your creativity and vision by exploring the limitless art of sculpture. At Anderson Ranch, our sculpture program offers a vibrant spectrum of workshops that reflect a variety of studio practices. At the confluence of tradition and technology, these programs are material and technique-rich, ranging from classical metal fabrication to experimental digital production.

Students work in communal and interactive studios designed for all levels of experience, supporting traditional and nontraditional methods. The sculpture studios are fully equipped with advanced machinery and offer additional outdoor covered workspace.

Our renowned sculpture faculty work closely with students through critical discussions, material demonstrations and individual assistance. Instructors encourage exploration and experimentation, emphasizing process and idea development. We complement this with a focus on process and sound construction. You leave with far more than finished pieces—you walk away with the tools and inspiration required to elevate your studio practice.

Sustainable Expressions: Paper Casting and Forming

Leah Aegerter

Tuition $1,160
Code S1412-24

In this foundational paper-making workshop, students transform pulp into unique cast-paper sculptures. Starting with dry abaca pulp, we dive into the process of reconstituting, beating, dying, and casting sheets with a traditional mold and deckle. Abaca paper is characterized by long fibers with impressive wet strength, making it ideal for manipulation. We mold the wet sheets onto objects from home, around the studio, or in the environment. Sewing and gluing aids in combining dried paper objects into sculptural creations.

Green Sand Casting Bronze and Aluminum

Betsy Alwin

Tuition $1,600
Code S1513-24

The course is a hands-on exploration of the methods of green sand casting, leading students in the process of using sand as a recyclable mold material to cast hot metal. We explore the techniques of creating a simple rigid pattern in wood, plaster, or a PLA 3D print. A wooden box, called a flask, is created to hold the sand mold and molten metal is then poured into the sand to take the shape of the pattern. This process can be repeated from scratch rapidly and allows for the sand to be recycled and used again, making it an economical and ecological method for working through ideas quickly. Class time consists of in-depth demonstrations balanced with plenty of studio work time for exploration, experimentation, and finishing. Must be 18 years old to participate.
